UV Absorbers

Ultraviolet (UV) absorbers are compounds specifically designed to protect materials from the harmful effects of UV radiation. Common types of UV absorbers include benzophenones, benzotriazoles, triazines, and salicylates. These compounds differ in their absorption spectra, UV protection efficiency, compatibility with different polymers, and resistance to environmental factors such as heat, humidity, and chemical exposure.

Mechanism of Action

UV absorbers act through a mechanism of electronic excitation and energy dissipation. When exposed to UV radiation, UV absorbers absorb photons within the UV wavelength range, causing electronic transitions within the molecule. This absorption process causes the electrons to rise to a higher energy level and then relaxation back to the ground state, releasing energy in the form of heat. By absorbing UV radiation and dissipating it as heat, UV absorbers effectively protect materials from UV-induced degradation.

Characteristics

UV absorbers should have the following characteristics:

  • Strongly absorbs UV light (especially at wavelengths of 290-400 nm)
  • Good thermal stability, even in processing will not change due to heat
  • Good chemical stability, no adverse reaction with the material components in the product
  • Good miscibility, can be uniformly dispersed in the material
  • Good photochemical stability of the absorber itself
  • Colorless, non-toxic, odorless
  • Inexpensive and easy to obtain
  • Not soluble in water or poorly soluble in water
